Lutheran Pastor Speaking At Service

MOUNDRIGE – Pastor Ron Rather, with St. John’s Lutheran Church in Moundridge, will be the featured speaker during the American Legion Rosser C. Fraser Post #340’s Memorial Service starting at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 29, at the Black Kettle West Park.

Rather said he would be speaking about the importance of Memorial Day and honoring the nation’s veterans. Rather did not serve in the military.

Memorial Days has been recognized since the American Legion was formed following the cessation of hostilities at the end of World War I.

Moundridge residents Mitchell Durst and Kim and Dan Frye will provide the music for the service.

Following the address, a firing squad comprised of local Legion members and veteran volunteers will perform military honors,

The service will conclude with Aaron Begnoche, instrumental music teacher for the Moundridge School District, playing “Taps.”

Memorial Day activities will include placing flags on the graves of deceased veterans buried in the Moundridge area. Families of the Fraser post members will set out flags on the evening of Friday, May 26 and will pick them up on the evening of Monday, May 29.

Cemeteries where veterans are buried include Mound Township, West Zion, Hopefield, Emmanuel Bible, Garden, French, Lone Tree and First Mennonite cemeteries.

An avenue of flags will be on display on the north side of Mound Township Cemetery all day, Monday, May 29.

In case of rain, the Memorial Day service will be held in the Moundridge Middle School Commons.
